Flat Iron, Soho [Steak]

£10 for steak! That’s all it needs to get me in the door but for a long time that foot never went through those doors maybe for the fear of a long queue or maybe steak still feels like a payday meal but this time we were going, even if there was a queue! Luckily there wasn’t.

Flat Iron is all about the brand, from the £10 steak to the mini-cleavers you cut them in to the free popcorn in a mug (which is always welcomed mind you), all in the effort for it to become ubiquitous with getting cheap but ‘good’ steak and on the whole Flat Iron does this in spades. It’s difficult not to like Flat Iron but somehow I did.

Whilst it’s hard to not think about the price of the steak in all honesty my steak was a tad chewier than I’d have liked, even at my usual medium rare which was also what was recommended. I know that the cut isn’t going to provide me the tenderness of filet or the flavours of porterhouse but I’m still expecting a good quality dinner, maybe my expectations were far too high.

The sides offered were generally well accomplished. More on the popcorn; they had a hint of beef dripping, which worked quite well. To accompany my steak I ordered the Fred’s Sauce. Personally I found the flavours a bit too bold to be served alongside steak. We also ordered a portion of dripping cooked chips and roast aubergine. The chips were beautifully crisp with, yet again, a hint of beef dripping whilst the aubergine was moreish and flavourful, a good accompaniment if you’re looking for something other than chips.

Whilst Flat Iron does many things beautifully I can’t help but feel a little disappointed. But there’s a lot to like and it’s easy to see why it has become so popular, it brings steak to a much more affordable price bracket which is great but for now I stay skeptical and will just have to wait till payday to go to Hawksmoor/Goodman.

  1. Yap, it’s a very specific cut of the meat and it’s more chewy but the meat is full of flavour. I like the flat iron cuts so really enjoyed Flat Iron, but I get it’s not for everyone’s taste. My favourite steak has to be a T-bone! So yummy
